WHEN Steppenwolf and the Two Bears arrived back in Zirndorf, it was to a dark house. Hoping Red had gone to bed early, Steppenwolf stuck his head in the guestroom door. Just then he heard Bear calling from the living room. “Wolfman, you’d better come here.”
Walking into the living room, Steppenwolf knew that his old friend didn’t have good news. Bear extended his hand, and in it was a folded piece of paper. Steppenwolf opened it and began reading.
Dear Wolf Daddy, I promise I’ll come back, but there’s something I’ve got to do first. Please believe that I love you, because I do. Love, Red Riding Hood.
“He’s gone,” Steppenwolf announced. “He’s gone to do something. I shouldn’t have been so rough on him. God damn it!”
Bear read the note and handed it to Cubby. “Look, Wolfman, he says he’ll be back. You’ve got to believe in that.”
“It’s all I’ve got to believe in, isn’t it, Bear?”
“Yeah, man, it is, but sometimes that’s all it takes. Okay? It’ll be all right. I’m sure of it.”
“I’m going to try to call him again.” Steppenwolf dialed Red’s cell phone.
This time Red answered. “Hello, Wolf Daddy, is that you?”
“For God’s sake, Red, are you all right?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m fine, Wolf Daddy, I promise. I’ve just got something I’ve got to do.”
“Look, Red Riding Hood, don’t tell me where you are in case somebody’s listening in. Did you get my message about the police?”
“Yes, I did.”
“Good. Just stay put until you hear from me. I’ll find out who killed Lola, and then I’ll come get you, wherever you are. Okay?”
“Okay. I think it’s the Russian mafia that killed Lola. Three of them gave me quite a chase through Nürnberg today, but I got away.”
Steppenwolf remembered the guy that had said “Da” earlier that day. He then realized that it was Red the three Russians had been chasing. Damn, he thought, I just missed him. “I think you’re right, Red. I’ll get on that. Just stay put. Okay?”
“Okay, Wolf Daddy. I love you.”
Steppenwolf didn’t want to say it, but he couldn’t help it. “I love you too. Good-bye.”
“Good-bye.”
Red breathed a sigh of relief when the phone went dead. He would like to have been right there in Steppenwolf’s strong arms tonight, because he now knew that his Wolf Daddy still loved him, but he did have something to do. It was really important, and only a full-grown man named Red could get the job done. He looked out the dark window of the ICE train as it zoomed through a small town, its lights streaking by like comets in the sky. Everything is going to be all right, he thought.
